The Matrix Mindset

Even though many of us grew up in a "matrix organization“ (reporting relationship to two parents), most working adults have experienced only a hierarchical reporting structure - a vertical chain of command in which they have one manager. [as an aside I wonder if those that grow up in a larger or more dominant matrix - extended family, single parent with others involved etc - environment find working in a matrix easier. An interesting thought to which I would value views and input]

This kind of structure creates operating efficiency and makes sense for some groups and for some individual roles.

Large organizations that rely solely on a chain of command structure often experience increased bureaucracy and decreased information sharing. This is a particular problem for organizations that need to respond rapidly to changing market conditions or client needs.

A matrix structure is better suited for information exchange, which in turn increases the ability to innovate and change. And, when people in the workforce participate in a matrix structure, they develop a matrix mindset.

Those with a matrix mindset put value on accountability to the success of the organization as a whole, not just the success of a single function or manager.
